Arwen Hernandez

Director

2016-17 is Ms. Arwen Hernandez’s first year as Director of Instrumental Music at Edison High School. She is currently in her 11th year of teaching. Ms. Hernandez began her teaching career in Los Angeles at CityLife Downtown Charter School. She was also the band director at Palisades Charter High School.

Ms. Hernandez is a native of Yucaipa, California, and attended Cal State Los Angeles where she pursued choral education and choral conducting. While there, she studied voice with Dr. Susan Kane and conducting with Dr. Abel Ramirez and Don Brinegar.

Arwen was a member of the Velvet Knights Drum and Bugle Corps and the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps, in which she played mellophone. She was member of the original London cast of Blast! the Show. Ms. Hernandez has instructed and cliniced many different drum and bugle corps and bands throughout the United States. She was a member of the Los Angeles Master Chorale from 2005 to 2010.

In her spare time, Ms. Hernandez enjoys reading, hiking, yoga and driving around less populated parts of California. She spends a lot of time at Disneyland with her baby son, Teddy, and her husband, Matt, who is one of the band directors at Fountain Valley High School. Their home is full of music, band talk and baby toys.

Ms. Hernandez is a member of the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association, the California Music Educators Association, and the National Association of Music Educators.
